NaNoWriMo Day 2

Currently
Four Christmases
By Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn
see related
Words written: 1,569
Total word count: 3,443/50,000

They mentioned this in an email we got, that we would probably stop and take a look at what we had written and start to rethink what we are writing. Then they said not to give up, but to press on. That is exactly what I did today. I woke up with the feeling that I was going in the wrong direction with what I had written, but I gave that notion up and kept writing. It's a good thing I did. I finished a second chapter and introduced my second main character. The two characters are going to have interweaving stories, but will not know each other for a good amount of time in the plot. I know I'm crazy for attempting to keep up with two different stories at once, with this being my first novel and all, but I feel that with the overall story I've developed, two main characters with different stories are necessary to achieve my goals.

A personal note. I've seen the others on the NaNo site who have word counts of already 9,000+ in only 2 days. I know it's not a competition, but I feel like a midget among giants with the stats I've seen from some of these people. I need to try to relax and just remember that it's for fun and enjoyment that we do this, not for competition. You are considered a winner of the event if you reach 50,000 words. I just try to think too hard, and having that daily 1,667 word goal is such a pain to overcome. It becomes more like a deadline. I'm great at handling deadlines, but I don't know how well I'll handle a month of straight deadlines. I think sometime this week I need to head to a coffee shop and sit down to give myself a good word-count buffer. Maybe if I reach 10,000 words soon I will start to feel more comfortable and less uptight about the whole thing.

Right now, I understand what you are saying about the huge word counts of others, but they are actually going for quantity. They may be building up background information, and eventually (hopefully) their chapters will thin out. Personally, I'm going steady but on the lower side for now, and I know that my later chapters will be more intricate once I introduce more characters. When I finish one chapter, I take a break, and start working on the other, so that that when I finally wake up the next day, some of the work is already done. Here's to achieving flow.

I get you there for sure. I wish I could be coming up with huge word counts for background info, but right now it's just been slow and steady. I guess part of the problem is that I didn't start on any outlining until last week, so things still pop into my head for characters, and I will try to add them in if I see fit. I like to take it one chapter at a time. Then I start planning for the next chapter, and when I wake up the next day, I have a good amount of thoughts for the chapter. I'm definitely going for flow as well.

Definitely! It's actually fun because there isn't any stress of being graded or anything, and you don't do any editing until November is over. It's basically to see if you can come up with a raw 50,000 word novel in a short period of time. It would be cool to see what we each write. I'll be more prepared next year, and I'll let people know about it too.

I remember once seeing the founder of NaNoWriMo saying that any words counted- even if they were just the lyrics of "Row Row Row Your Boat" repeated ad infinitum. Maybe that's what the 9000+ word writers are doing. Because honestly... that's a lot of words for two days.

Exactly. My fingers are aching after 3,400.... haha. I could easily just put nonsense into the novel to get a word count up, but I would cheat myself out of quality. Even if I reached 49,000 words on November 30th at 11:59pm, I still would not copy and paste 1,000 words to reach the goal. I would simply pick up where I left off on December 1st and finish it all up.

I've included some verses, but they are necessary in the story like a reflection point for the MC or an orientation for the reader so they know what is going on. The only superfluous words I have are in the foreword which only amounts to 99 words.
